Matt Bettencourt eagled on the 11th hole, then held off Bob Heintz by a stroke to win for the first time on the PGA Tour.

Bettencourt capped his 4-under 68 with a bogey on No. 18 after a birdie on 17, finishing the Reno-Tahoe Open at 11-under 277 Sunday. After his eagle on the par-5 11th, he played the final seven holes in 1 over par. He also bogeyed the par-4 14th at Montreux Golf & Country Club.

Heintz (69) missed a three-foot birdie putt on the 18 that would have forced a playoff.

He started the week trying to qualify for a Nationwide Tour event in Ohio before he was notified he’d qualified for Reno and hopped plane to Nevada on Tuesday.

John Merrick and Mathias Gronberg each shot 69 and tied for third at 9-under.

Robert Gamez (68), Kent Jones (68), Alex Cejka (69), Kevin Stadler (70) and Craig Barlow (72) all finished another stroke back at 8-under.

Bettencourt won the money title on the Nationwide Tour in 2008 and tied for 10th at the U.S. Open last year. He finished 111th on the PGA money list with $740,037 that year.

This win qualified him to play in the PGA Championship for the first time.

Bettencourt had a three-stroke lead with five holes to play Sunday but failed to get up and down out of a greenside bunker on the 491-yard 14th.

He drove into the rough left on the 477-yard par-4 15th and had to hook his approach around a tree 165 yards to just right of the green.

He chipped up to 6 feet and made the par putt and scrambled his way to another par on the par-3 16th when he missed the green off the tee, but chipped up to 8 feet.

On the 636-yard, par-5 17th, Bettencourt hit his second shot into a greenside bunker but blasted out to 5 feet and rolled in the birdie to get to 12-under, two strokes ahead of Heintz, who made an 8-foot birdie putt on the 17th to set up the drama on the final hole.

Earlier, Bettencourt chipped in from 10 feet away in the rough at the par-5 ninth for his third birdie of the day to make the turn with a one-stroke lead over Heintz.

On the 584-yard 11th, he hit his second shot 276 yards onto the edge of the green and made a 7-footer for eagle.

Scott McCarron, a former Reno resident and Montreux member who served as the tournament host, started the day at 10-under with a one-stroke lead over John Mallinger and Robert Garrigus. But he fell to a tie for 35th at 1 under with five bogeys and two double bogeys on the way to an 81.

Mallinger had a quadruple-bogey 9 on the 616-yard 9th — dropping twice from unplayable lies after driving wide left into the trees and sage brush — en route to a 77 and a tie for 21st.

Tommy Gainey shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday to become the Nationwide Tour’s first two-time winner this season, holding on for a three-stroke victory in the Chiquita Classic.

Gainey, who matched the course record at TPC River Bend with a 62 in the third round, earned US$99,000 and moved to No. 1 on the Nationwide Tour money list with $306,307. The top 25 on the money list at the end of the year get PGA Tour cards for 2011.

Joe Affrunti shot a 65 in the final round and finished second at 24 under for the tournament. Geoffrey Sisk and Colt Knost tied for third at 22 under.

Gainey’s final score equaled the second-lowest, sub-par finish in tour history. His 54-hole score of 24 under matched the tour record.

Jon Mills of Oshawa, Ont., fired a 68 to finish 11 shots back, while David Hearn (69) of Brantford, Ont., and Ted Brown (68) of Peterborough, Ont., both wound up 17 strokes off the lead.

Calgary’s Dustin Risdon (73) and Keven Fortin-Simard (71) of Roberval, Que., rounded out the Canadians, finishing 20 and 26 shots back, respectively.

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel beat McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton to win the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

World championship leader Hamilton bounced back from a drive-through penalty, but German Vettel proved equal to the challenge.

McLaren’s Jenson Button was third after escaping with a five-second penalty for an offence under the safety car.

The safety car was used after a massive crash for Mark Webber’s Red Bull from which the Australian emerged unhurt.

Webber had made an early pit-stop to get himself out of traffic, after he had found himself running down in ninth place after losing places on the first lap following a poor start.

Webber was trying to pass the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen when he hit the back of the Finn’s car. The Red Bull reared into the air, before crashing onto the circuit upside-down.

It flipped the right way up before Webber sledded at high speed into the tyre wall. Amazingly, he emerged unscathed.

There had already been an incident on the opening lap, as Hamilton tried to pass pole-winner Vettel for the lead at Turn Two.

The Red Bull’s wheel clipped the left-front wing of the McLaren, and as a result Hamilton was suffering from a vibration during the opening stages of the race.

But the safety car, which appeared on track while marshals mopped up the debris from the Webber/Kovalainen accident, effectively allowed Hamilton to have a new nose fitted to his McLaren without losing a position.

Vettel managed to pass the pit-lane exit before the safety car emerged onto the circuit.

The safety car then exited the pits just as Hamilton was passing. Had the Englishman continued at racing speed he would have beaten it to the white ‘safety-car line’, but he backed off, then illegally accelerated past the safety car a matter of feet after the line.

Hamilton then sprinted clear of the rest of the pack before following Vettel into the pits, as the timing of the safety car scuppered the prospects of Ferrari.

Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were third and fourth respectively before Webber’s accident. They had just passed the pit entry when the race went under caution, and were first in the queue behind the safety car before they pitted one lap later.

Button, who was in sixth position at the time of Webber’s accident, was able to dive into the pits immediately the race went under caution.

That vaulted the reigning world champion to fourth, behind Vettel, Hamilton and the Sauber of Kamui Kobayashi, who had elected not to pit while the race was under caution.

With Button unable to challenge Kobayashi for position, Vettel and Hamilton scorched away from the pack.

Hamilton then served his drive-through penalty at the end of the 27th of 57 laps, and such was his advantage over Kobayashi that we able to rejoin without losing a place.

As well as his first-lap brush with Hamilton, Vettel survived another scare when he locked up under braking at the final turn, just as the safety car returned to the pits.

The German was particularly happy to take his second win of the season on a circuit that was not expected to suit the Red Bull.

“We didn’t expect to be that strong,” said Vettel, “so it was great to be quick enough to slightly pull away, find the gap and then bring the car home.

“I had a huge lock-up of my brakes after the safety car, trying to brake as late as I could. The tyres weren’t up to temperature after going round slowly, but I could stay in front.

“I tried not to push too hard and when I got the message that Lewis had the penalty I backed off a bit more.

“It’s good to get a lot of points, it’s good for the championship and the guys can be extremely proud – they had very little sleep but it paid off, and now we have to focus on the next one (the British Grand Prix in two weeks’ time).”

Hamilton said: “At certain stages it looked like he was slowing down, so I tried to close the gap, but he was able to react to that.

“Therefore I just tried to bring the car home in one piece – there’s nothing worse than getting almost the whole way through the race and then for something to happen at the end.”

Kobayashi pitted with just six laps remaining, freeing up Button, who immediately set what would be the fastest lap of the race.

Button was one of nine drivers who were penalised after the race, by the addition of five seconds to their race time, for breaching the rules when the safety car was called out.

Each was found to have completed the third sector of the track and entered the pits below the minimum time allowed under safety-car regulations.

It made no difference to the final result for the four highest-placed offenders: Button, Williams’s Barrichello (who took fourth, his team’s best result of the season), Renault’s Robert Kubica (fifth) and Force India’s Adrian Sutil (sixth).

But it provided further misery for Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi.

After his late stop, Kobayashi rejoined in ninth and, on fresh tyres, was able to pass both Alonso and Buemi (who left the door open at the final corner of the race) to take seventh.

Buemi’s five-second penalty then meant he lost a further place to Alonso, who was able to gain a crucial two extra points as he was elevated to eighth.

Sauber driver Pedro de la Rosa was another to lose out. He had finished 10th on the road, but his penalty knocked him down to 12th.

It meant that Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg was promoted into the points after a miserable race for the team, who suffered from severe brake problems on the cars of both Rosberg and Michael Schumacher.

Others to lose places due to penalties were Renault’s Vitaly Petrov, who dropped from 11th to 14th, and Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi (13th to 16th). The last of the nine, Nico Hulkenberg, retired his Williams a few laps from the finish.

Serena Williams finished with an ace and a curtsy, showing she’s ready for the queen and a lot more at Wimbledon.

The defending champion won her opening match Tuesday, relying on an overpowering serve to beat 17-year-old Michelle Larcher De Brito of Portugal 6-0, 6-4.

Williams won all 27 points on her first serve and hit 15 aces, the last on her final shot. As the crowd applauded her victory, Williams curtsied, mindful Queen Elizabeth II is expected to visit Wimbledon for the first time since 1977 on Thursday.

Williams plays her second-round match that day and has been practicing her curtsy.

“I want it to be more natural,” she said. “Right now it feels really forced. Seems like I’ve never done a curtsy before, which may be true. But I’m looking forward to nailing it.”

The queen won’t get to see French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur, who lost to qualifier Kaia Kanepi 6-4, 6-4. Stosur came into the tournament ranked a career-best sixth.

“No doubt it’s a quick turnaround,” Stosur said. “The champions of the game can do it back to back. That’s the kind of pedestal that you want to try to look up to and try to get to yourself.”

Roland Garros winner Francesca Schiavone lost Monday.

Maria Sharapova, the 2004 Wimbledon champion, needed only 54 minutes to beat lucky loser Anastasia Pivovarova 6-1, 6-0.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova edged Akgul Amanmuradova 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4. No. 7-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Melinda Czink 6-3, 6-3, and No. 10 Flavia Pennetta swept Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 6-0.

Williams played first on Centre Court and remained unbeaten in opening Grand Slam matches. She’s 43-0 in the first round at major events.

For her return to Wimbledon on a warm, sunny afternoon, the three-time champion wore a cream dress with red trim.

“Strawberries and cream,” she said.

Larcher De Brito, ranked 148th, has three wins over top-20 players but was overwhelmed at the start, needing 33 minutes to win a game.

The teenager then began to play better, and grunts that accompanied her shots grew louder. Last year, French Open opponent Aravane Rezai complained that Larcher De Brito’s shrieks were too loud, and the noise drew considerable attention from the British media at Wimbledon.

“Anything with my grunting, I don’t want to answer,” Larcher De Brito said. “I don’t want to go down the same road again.”

Williams grunted, too. There were some vigorous rallies down the stretch, with Larcher De Brito holding her own as both players scrambled along the baseline.

“She definitely packs a punch,” Williams said. “It was good for me because most people that do play nowadays hit really hard. It was good to get someone that hit really hard early on.”

Williams packed the bigger punch — she finished with 47 winners to six for Larcher De Brito, many on serves that reached up to 119 mph.

“It’s not even about the pace, because I could deal with that,” Larcher De Brito said. “But she places it so well. When she aims for targets, she really hits that line or just clips that line.”

In the final game, Williams hit a service winner and three aces to close out the victory. She said poor serving cost her when she was upset by Stosur in the quarterfinals at the French Open.

“I served so terrible my last match at the French,” Williams said. “I went home and worked really hard on my serve. I was incredibly disappointed with it. Had a talk with my serve. I said, ‘You know, we got to do a little bit better.’ “

Williams reached double figures in aces for the eighth time this year, most on the women’s tour. She has won 58 of her past 59 matches against players ranked outside the top 100.

JORGE Lorenzo extended his lead at the top of the world championship after a dominant performance at the British MotoGP in Silverstone.

The Fiat Yamaha rider started from pole and led all the way to finish ahead of Italian Andrea Dovizioso on a Honda with American Ben Spies third for Yamaha.

American Nicky Hayden finished fourth ahead of Australian Casey Stoner.

“This was an important day for me and an important win, because I felt so strong and I enjoyed riding my Yamaha so much,” said Lorenzo, who now leads Dovizioso by 37 points in the championship standings.

“I had a different feeling today. I felt it was going to be a good race.

“I never dreamt of taking three wins from five races but here we are and I am feeling very strong mentally at this moment. I want to thank my team, Yamaha and Bridgestone for this victory.”

Lorenzo had built up an eight-second lead at the half-way point with the main battle being more for second place behind him.

Spies managed to overtake Hayden right at the end of the race to grab the final podium spot, his first ever in Moto GP.

“I didn’t expect to get my first podium so quickly, especially after yesterday which wasn’t the best for me,” said Spies.

“I got a decent start but once I got by Dani (Pedrosa) and (Marco) Simoncelli I just tried to stay on the back of the group battling for the podium.

“Once I realised I could stay in contention, I just tried to save the rear tyre as much as I could and it all worked out.”

Honda’s Dani Pedrosa, the winner in Italy two weeks ago, started on the front row with Lorenzo and de Puniet, but lost ground in the title race with his fellow Spaniard as he dropped to eighth.

Lorenzo, 23, who is favourite for the title after team-mate Valentino Rossi broke his leg in practice for the Italian Grand Prix, has now won three of the five races so far this season with two second-place finishes.

France’s Randy de Puniet had started from second on the grid and held that position until being overtaken first by Dovizioso on lap seven and then by Ducati’s Hayden four laps from the end to finally finish sixth.

A NASCAR ruling cost Marcos Ambrose his first career Sprint Cup Series victory Sunday when he stalled his car under a late caution at Infineon Raceway and was forced to forfeit his lead to Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson went on to win his first career Cup race on a road course and ended a 10-week victory drought for the four-time defending series champion.

Ambrose, who led 35 laps, had to settle for sixth after coughing up yet another chance at a victory.

"My bad," the Australian said. "Just feel really disappointed. Might not like the call, but it is what it is. I know the rule. It’s a judgment call."

Ambrose, a road racing ace, was cruising to a long-awaited victory when caution for a Brad Keselowski spin threw a roadblock in his path. Instructed by his crew chief to conserve fuel, Ambrose flipped his engine on and off as he circled the winding 1.99-mile course.

But his Toyota apparently stalled, and six cars weaved around his unmoving Toyota. Although Ambrose got his car restarted and moved back to the front of the field, NASCAR ordered him back to seventh for "failing to maintain reasonable speed" right before the restart.

That gave Johnson the lead and he sailed away for his fourth win of the season, but first since Bristol in March.

Ambrose crew chief Frank Kerr visited NASCAR officials after the race, and said he understood the ruling. But asked if he was "content" with the ruling, he said only "no comment."

Kerr also asked Sprint Cup Series director John Darby about the 2007 race at Kansas, where winner Greg Biffle appeared to run out of gas under caution on the final lap and was passed by Johnson and Clint Bowyer before the finish line.

"I asked John about that, and that’s OK. And then I asked if it’s OK to get pushed around, so I’m not really sure what the difference is," Kerr said. "Depends on who you are, I guess."

Darby said the Biffle situation was different because Biffle’s car continued moving and the two cars behind him sped up to make the pass.

"Biffle maintained pace, the other cars picked up 20 miles per hour," Darby said.

Robby Gordon finished second in a Toyota for his highest finish of the season, and series points leader Kevin Harvick was third in a Chevrolet. Defending race winner Kasey Kahne finished fourth in a Ford and Jeff Gordon rounded out the top five.

Biffle was seventh and was followed by Boris Said, Tony Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Graeme McDowell doesn’t have the golfing pedigree of a U.S. Open champion at Pebble Beach.

All he had Sunday was the game it takes to win.

Even as the biggest stars—Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els—were lined up behind him on the leaderboard and poised to contribute to the lineage of champions on this majestic course, McDowell never felt out of place.

Despite making only one birdie in the final round, the 30-year-old from Northern Ireland was steady amid the stars of his generation and closed with a 3-over 74 to become the first European in 40 years to capture America’s national championship.

He seized control after a shocking collapse by Dustin Johnson, then failed to get flustered by the three stars behind him, who have combined for 184 victories and 21 majors. All he had to do on the final hole was two-putt for par from 20 feet to join a distinguished list.

“To win at Pebble Beach, to join the names—Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite, Tiger Woods, me—wow!” McDowell said. “I’m not quite sure if I belong in that list, but hey, I’m there now. It’s a pretty amazing feeling.”

Almost as surprising was the guy who gave McDowell the most trouble. Gregory Havret, a Frenchman who is No. 391 in the world, played with heart until he failed to convert putts over the final holes. He shot 72 and finished one shot behind.

“When you have Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els there, you’re not expecting Gregory Havret to be the guy you’ve got to fend off,” McDowell said.

Indeed, it was a final round no one expected.

Johnson took a triple bogey on the second hole to lose all of his three-shot lead, and a double bogey on the next hole ended his hopes. Not only was McDowell handed the lead, but Woods, Mickelson and Els were given new life.

What a wasted opportunity that turned out to be.

McDowell’s lone birdie was an eight-foot putt on the fifth hole, and his final round was the highest score by a U.S. Open champion since Andy North in 1985.

“I can’t believe I’m standing with this right now,” McDowell said, posing with silver trophy. “It’s a dream come true. I’ve been dreaming it all my life. Two putts to win the U.S. Open. Can’t believe it happened.”

Woods couldn’t believe it, either.

Poised to end six months of bad publicity over a shattered personal life, he bogeyed five of his first 10 holes and took himself out of contention with a 75.

“I made three mental mistakes,” Woods said sourly. “The only thing it cost us was a chance to win the U.S. Open.”

Els and Mickelson hung around a little longer, and both had opportunities, but neither could capitalize.

Els had a brief share of the lead on the front nine but came undone along the coastal holes—including one stretch of bogey-double bogey-bogey—and never quite recovered. His hopes ended when he missed his target with a sand wedge on the par-5 14th and took bogey, then missed a four-foot birdie putt on the 15th.

He closed with a 73 to finish alone in third.

Mickelson, with another great chance to end a career of disappointment at the U.S. Open, holed a birdie putt from just off the green on the first hole, then didn’t made another birdie the rest of the day. He also shot a 73 and tied for fourth with Woods, missing a chance to supplant Woods at No. 1 in the world.

“It was anybody’s ball game,” Mickelson said. “I had a number of opportunities to get well under par, and I didn’t do it.”

Even so, nothing compares with what happened to Johnson. The 25-year-old American looked so unflappable all week, and came apart so quickly. On the final hole of a round he won’t forget, Johnson missed a two-foot birdie putt and wound up with an 82, the highest closing round by a 54-hole leader in the U.S. Open since Fred McLeod shot 83 in 1911.

McDowell finished at even-par 284 and ended 40 years of questions about when a European would be U.S. Open champion again. Tony Jacklin of England was the last one, in 1970 at Hazeltine.

McDowell had to work harder than he imagined.

Even under overcast skies and a stiff breeze, the course was as firm and dangerous as ever. Davis Love III, with a 71, was the only player in the final five groups to match par.

“I can’t believe how difficult this golf course was,” McDowell said. “No matter how good you play … good golf got reward, and bad golf got punished really badly.”

McDowell got into the U.S. Open by narrowly getting into the top 50 in the world at the deadline to avoid qualifying. He wound up with his first victory in America to go along with five European Tour victories, most recently the Wales Open last month at the home course for the Ryder Cup in October. He is sure to be part of the European team now, moving up to No. 13 in the world.

“To play steady and to withstand some tough holes the way Graeme did and to come out on top, he played some great golf,” Mickelson said. “It was a wide-open tournament. Many guys had a chance. And it made for kind of an exciting U.S. Open, I thought.”

It didn’t sound like one.

The gentle waves lapping the shore almost made more noise than the gallery, with so few birdies to cheer on a day that was more about survival. McDowell had a three-shot lead as he walked down the 10th fairway, and from there it was a matter of hanging on.

“You go chasing and you’ll make bogeys,” McDowell said.

Mickelson gave it one last try when he fired at a dangerous pin on the right side of the 16th green. It came up just short and buried in the deep grass, and when the Masters champion heard the groan, he said to caddie Jim Mackay, “I took a chance, Bones. Didn’t pay off.”

Els played the par-3 17th in 5-over par for the week, including a bogey from the bunker on Sunday. Needing an eagle on the 18th to have any chance, he came up woefully short and right in a bunker.

None of this would have been mattered without Johnson’s collapse, which was simply spectacular.

He had a three-shot lead and was in the middle of the fairway at No. 2 with a wedge in his hand after a 343-yard drive. When he walked off the green at No. 4, he was three shots behind, a six-shot turnaround in three holes:

From thick grass on the edge of a bunker, he chopped at it left-handed, then nearly whiffed right-handed, and, when he finally chipped it to three feet, he missed the putt and took triple bogey. His lead was gone.

With a driver on the par-4 third, he pulled it so far left that it disappeared into a cluster of trees behind the 16th greens. Fans heard it, but didn’t see it. The five minutes allowed for the search ended, and seconds later, someone cried out, “Found it!” Too late. He went back to the tee, hit into a fairway bunker and made double bogey.

Trying to drive the fourth green, it went right into the hazard along the ocean for a bogey.

Three holes into the final round, the U.S. Open was wide open, setting up perfectly for the three biggest names in golf—Woods, Mickelson and Els—to seize the moment.

To most everyone’s surprise, none of them did.

He was the 2006 and 2007 250cc World Champion. He is currently a rider in the MotoGP Class, on the Factory Yamaha Team.

On 25 August 2009, Lorenzo ended speculation surrounding a possible move to Honda or Ducati by signing a contract to race with Yamaha in the 2010 MotoGP Championship. Ducati reputedly offered him a 15 million dollar contract to take Nicky Hayden’s position.

Lorenzo broke two bones in his hand in a pocket bike crash pre-season, therefore missing most of the pre-season testing. He fought through the field to finish second to Rossi in the season opener in Qatar, whilst still not fully fit. During a break between the Italian and British rounds of the championship, Lorenzo rode a Yamaha in a parade lap around the world famous Snaefell Mountain Course at the Isle of Man TT. He rode alongside former World Champion Ángel Nieto, later describing the experience as ‘amazing’.

USA fought back from two goals down to earn a battling 2-2 draw with Slovenia and keep their FIFA World Cup hopes alive in an exciting Group C clash at Ellis Park.

Matjaz Kek’s men looked on course for a second straight win in the section when they took a 2-0 lead into the break through Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic but the Americans hit back as Landon Donovan narrowed the deficit before Michael Bradley equalised eight minutes from time. The result left Slovenia top of Group C with four points ahead of England’s meeting with Algeria later in the day, and ensured the Americans remain undefeated with two draws ahead of their third game against the Algerians.

An exciting contest opened with Birsa blasting Slovenia into an early lead. There were just 13 minutes on the clock when the midfielder collected the ball some 25 yards from goal and left Tim Howard rooted to the spot with an expertly guided strike to the goalkeeper’s left. Bradley’s men sought a response and came close when midfielder Francisco Torres fired in a free-kick from out wide that drew a fingertip save from Samir Handanovic. Donovan then looked set to tap in Clint Dempsey’s low cross only for Slovenia defender Miso Brecko to get a decisive touch to clear the ball.

Slovenia looked to be in dreamland in the 42nd minute when Ljubijankic doubled their lead. Milivoje Novakovic played a defence-splitting pass through to Ljubijankic who, with the Americans appealing in vain for offside, slipped the ball coolly past Howard. Yet Donovan threw the Americans a lifeline three minutes after the restart when Bostjan Cesar failed to deal with a ball down the right touchline, allowing the LA Galaxy man a free run into the box. Cutting in from the right, Donovan lashed a superb shot high above Handanovic at the near post.

With the Slovenia defence struggling to cope with the power and aerial strength of the imposing Jozy Altidore, Bradley’s men kept the pressure on and the coach’s son grabbed the US the point their efforts deserved – a father-and-son first in the FIFA World Cup. Altidore nodded a high ball down into the path of the onrushing Borussia Moenchengladbach midfielder and he fired emphatically into the roof of the net. The Americans might even have won the game only for referee Koman Coulibaly to rule out a goal from Maurice Edu, who volleyed home Donovan’s free-kick from the right. There was still time for Novakovic to threaten with a header at the other end but his effort was held comfortably by Howard.
