Zach Johnson wins Texas Open in a playoff

zach johnson Zach Johnson made a 12-foot birdie on the first playoff hole to beat James Driscoll and repeat as the Valero Texas Open champion Sunday.

Seven months after winning for the first time at La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio, Johnson’s even-par 70 was good enough for a 15-under 265 and forced the sudden-death playoff with Driscoll, who surged from eight strokes back.

Johnson vaulted to the top of the FedEx Cup standings with the win, his second this year.

Paul Goydos had birdied on 16 to take a one-stroke lead, but the 44-year-old and sympathetic favorite bogeyed the last two holes to finish 14 under. Goydos was playing four months to the day his ex-wife died, a tragedy that led him to briefly leave the tour.

Ji Young Oh shot 2-under 70 and benefited from a couple of mistakes by Suzann Pettersen on the back nine to capture the $2 million Sybase Classic by four shots.

The 20-year-old South Korean finished with a 14-under total on the Upper Montclair Country Club at Clifton, N.J., in winning her second LPGA title and earning $300,000.

Pettersen was tied for the lead after 11 holes but bogeyed the 12th hole after a bad drive and then handed Oh the title with bogeys on the final two holes.

Oh put an exclamation point on the win with a 7-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole.

Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer finished tied for third at 8-under after failing to mount a charge on a cold, raw day.

Keith Fergus won the rain-shortened Regions Charity Classic at Hoover, Ala., shooting a second straight 6-under 66 to beat Gene Jones by three strokes.

Fergus waited out the second long rain delay in as many days and then finished the second round in a steady drizzle for his second win of the year. Tournament officials decided before the restart not to try to get in the final 18 holes.

It was the first time a Champions Tour event had been limited to 36 holes because of weather since the Administaff Small Business Classic in 2006.

Jones, who was tied for the lead entering Sunday, ended with a 69 to finish at 9 under. Joe Azaki was four strokes back and seven players finished at 7 under.

European Tour

Irish amateur Shane Lowry has won the Irish Open at Baltray with a par on the third hole of a playoff against Robert Rock of England.

Lowry missed a 3-foot putt to win on the 72nd hole on Sunday and he and Rock finished at 17-under 271.

They halved the first two holes of their playoff on the par-5 18th, but Lowry made par on the third attempt as Rock missed the green with his third shot and took three more to get down.
